South Africa houses the deepest mines on earth, most of them long-abandoned. Gangs visit violence upon each other deep underground, while myths speak of cannibals who stalk the forests above. For Fenya, the mines are the last place his father was ever seen. For the “Zama zama”, independent miners who plunge into the depths of the earth in search of riches, the dream of easy wealth is all too alluring.

A flood is coming. As people scramble to secure themselves, there are rumored sightings of the elusive Impundulu or “Lightning Bird” - a vampiric, shapeshifting creature that takes the form of a beautiful young man to lure its victims to their death. Amahle believes that the “spirit” has chosen her as its next victim, much to the disbelief of those around her. 

Part modern-day peril, part fantasy, this is a modern folktale that delves into the shadows and mythology of urban South Africa.     IN  DEVELOPMENT
